Kristina Debarge
DEBARGE FAMILY TIES
By. Amero
Its officially spring! The flowers and trees are dropping their seeds
spreading their genetic structures ensuring the survival of life. Its beautiful
and complex how the cycle of life works. Families grow and expand and
add to the legacy of the family name. Which is exactly what the Debarge
family continues to do. We all remember the platinum and gold selling
group from the 80’s whose numerous singles kept Motown afloat during the
1980’s. Enter Kristina Debarge a wonderful rose from “the city of roses”
Pasadena, Ca. Daughter of James Debarge, Kristina Debarge is quickly
making a name for herself as a singer. As a child Kristina always wanted to
sing (you think??)but never made it known till she was about 12 years old.
Her father took her to the studio and they recorded their first single
together. A year later Kristina made her national t.v. debut on “American
Juniors”(an american idol spin-off). As the shows youngest contestant( at
13 years old) she wowed fans and made the top twenty which was a great
feat if you ask me. After American Juniors she was introduced to “Baby Face”
and signed a deal with sodapop/ Island def jam and began working on her
debut album “Exposed” in 2009 which debuted at #23 on billboard's top
200. As if she wasn't busy enough Kristina Debarge's acting career began
in 2012 with the movie “Christmas in Compton”. Then she received the
leading role in Nick Cannons directorial debut called "School Dance" in
2014. Kristina has a single that I like that is called “Radio” which has solid
production and Kristina seems to have a grasp of how to balance making
a single while still being original. Also check out her song “Amnesia” where
Kristina Debarge talks about relationship issues! Kristina is definitely the
next in a long line of Debarges to hit the scene but where are all these
Debarges coming from?? Seriously there's probably a daycare somewhere
with about a hundred of these Lil guys and gals training for their chance
to come out. SMH.. Oh well at least they do have talent to spread around
unlike some of my siblings but i digress. Check out this lovely young lady
Kristina Debarge on The Streetwise Radio Ultra Mix 1am to 12pm, 1pm to
4:30pm andpm to 10pm pacific time. And remember for all your
delivery needs in the San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco Bay Area
it's Streetwise Special Delivery. PEACE.

Gwendolyn Collins
This singer/songwriter
from Hackensack, New Jersey is undiscovered by some people but not for long. I can
see her blowing up on On Air Radio stations as well as Internet
Radio. Gwendolyn Collins has an album out called “Storytelling Side
1”. This album is wonderful it has that Neo Soul, Jazzy feel. I’m
really liking her writing style and her voice is amazing. She tells a
story with her lyrics. I’ve never heard of Gwendolyn Collins until
DJ Michael Ealey turned me on to her. She is definitely going on my
playlist. Some of my favorite songs of Gwendolyn Collins are, “Simple
Things”, “Beautiful Fantasy”, “Beautiful Girl”, “Be
Happy”, “Feeling Blessed”, “Peel Me A Grape” and “Typical”.
Don’t sleep on this amazing artist Gwendolyn Collins, she is going
places. You can listen to her songs on Streetwise Radio. Also listen

Up Close and Personal with Will Downing: The Prince of Sophisticated Soul Performs at Yoshi’s San Francisco This Weekend
By
Shelah Moody
Will
Downing performs 8 p.m., Saturday March 1(sold out) and 7 p.m.,
Sunday March 2, Yoshi's San Francisco, 1330 Fillmore Street, SF, CA
94115, 415.655.5600, yoshis.com/sanfrancisco
Euphoria:
A state of intense happiness and self-confidence.- dictionary.com.
His
name evokes a feeling of warmth, comfort and strength. Grammy
nominated vocalist Will Downing, aka the Prince of Sophisticated
Soul, is currently celebrating 25 years in the music business, with
17 full-length recordings to his credit. Downing performs March 1-2
at Yoshi’s San Francisco, and had already sold out the first show.
Like
other great artists such as Charlie Wilson, Toni Braxton, Angela
Bofill and Teddy Pendergrass, Downing has come back from serious
health challenges, including a battle with polymyositis. As a health
advocate, Downing is currently a spokesperson for the American Stroke
Association). Downing is currently gearing up for the release of his
new solo project, aptly titled “Euphoria,” on his independent
Sophisticated Soul label. Lovers get ready--the first single is a
cover of Teddy Pendergrass’ fireside love song, “Turn off the
Lights.”
In
terms of vocal style, Downing is known as a baritone with a unique
tenor range. I recently caught up with the acclaimed artist for a
brief interview.
Shelah
Moody: One of my favorite Will Downing interpretations is Angela
Bofill’s “I Try.” What do you love about that song, and are you
in touch with Angela Bofill?
Will
Downing: I talk to Angela quite often. I recorded “I Try” back in
1991. It was basically a male interpretation of the idea that men try
as well (laughs). It sort of needed to be said from a man’s
perspective. That’s what prompted me to do that version of the
song.
SM:
Another one of my favorite Will Downing interpretations is “I Go
Crazy,” by Paul Davis. What made you choose that song?
WD:
Both of those songs are on my “A Dream Fulfilled” album. “I Go
Crazy” was a song that I really didn’t want to record, but the
president of the record company at the time--I guess it was his
favorite. I did the song reluctantly, kicking and screaming. It ended
up being one of the biggest songs that I’ve recorded.
SM: I
like the way you took a light rock song and made it quiet storm.
WD:
Thank you.
SM:
How many musicians will accompany you at Yoshi’s San Francisco?
WD:
Collectively, seven, including drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, two
backing vocalists and myself. It’s a big sound. Trust me, I have
some very skilled musicians and we’re gonna make this thing do what
it do, as they say.
SM:
What are some of your most requested songs?
WD:
Probably, the first two that you mentioned, “I Try” and “I Go
Crazy.” There’s a duet that I do with Rachelle Ferrell called
“Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This.” If I don’t sing that song,
people start throwing fruit at me! Also, there’s “A Million
Ways.” Trust me, from the time that you’ll be there, we’ll take
you on a 25-year journey. Within the show, we will do all of the
songs that helped maintain my career. I’m glad to still be doing
what I do.
SM: I
remember meeting you backstage after you performed at the Sleep Train
Pavilion in Concord, CA in 2005. I was impressed by how warm and open
you were with your fans. Is that something that’s important to you?
WD:
Oh, it’s extremely important. I mean, it’s the only opportunity
where you get to see people up close and personal in the masses. I’m
very grateful, I’m always shocked when I see that amount of people;
and there were a lot of people there that night. It’s really
important that you let fans know how grateful you are that they are
there and that they’ve been supportive. Anytime I walk on stage, I
get paid to do it, so I try to give it 100 percent. We go down memory
lane together; these songs are the songs of our lives; we grew up on
these songs together. I try to give back what I get.
SM:
You just told me that you are from Brooklyn, NY. How did growing up
in the city influence your music?
WD: I
don’t know if Brooklyn is a musical Mecca or anything like that,
but music was played heavily in my home. I grew up listening to what
my older brother and sister and my parents listened to, which was
good quality music. My parents were big jazz fans and so in our
household, you’d hear just about everything. You’d hear Johnny
Hartman, Nat King Cole and Nancy Wilson. My sister would be playing
the Ohio Players and my brother would be playing Earth, Wind and
Fire. I always grew up around good music; like Stevie Wonder. I guess
it kind of stuck and became embedded in my DNA.
SM:
You have gone through some serious health challenges over the years.
What got you through them and kept you going?
WD:
Well, first and foremost, I credit God for all things. God is
definitely in my corner, and helped me get back on my feet. Also,
there was my family, doctors and medicine—all of that combined was
helpful.
SM:
Congratulations on your new album, “Euphoria. Tell us about it.
WD:
It’s a project that will be out in a few weeks. It’s my 17th
project. “Euphoria” is an eight-song project, primarily remakes
and one original song. I flipped the script just a little bit. Over
the years, I’ve been known as a soulful kind of R&B singer with
jazzy overtones. I made “Euphoria” more of a jazzy record with
soulful overtones. I think people are going to be pleased with the
song selections, and I hope that they are also pleased with the
performances.
SM:
Tell us about your “Sophisticated Soul” label.
WD:
It’s something that I’ve been doing for the last three years. I’d
been with Universal Records for 23 years, and it was time for a
change. I mean, in this day and age of digital download and Internet,
I just decided to go my own route and see how I would do, and so far,
so good! This is my second release on my own label and I’m not
complaining; I’m happy with it.
SM:
Tell us about the first single from “Euphoria.”
WD:
The first song on this project is actually a remake of the Teddy
Pendergrass song, “Turn off the Lights.” I’m real excited about
that. It’s an amazing song; obviously a classic. I flipped it a
little bit. I think folks know the original version as being the
in-your-face Teddy singing it to you rough and ready. I kind of
smoothed it out and made it more appealing. These are two
interpretations of the same some. I’m not saying that mine is
better; it’s just an interpretation.

TGT Three Kings
One thing I
can say about TGT is, Fantastic! For all of you who don’t know what TGT stands
for, it is the first names of this marvelous group Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank.
These three brothers are all amazing R&B singers on their own, but their
collaboration was one of the best things they could have done. TGT is the rebirth
of R&B, that good love making music. They formed in 2007 and went on tour
in 2008. The name of tour was called “Shirts Off”, this was a great name
because these three brother are sexy. TGT released their debut album “Three
Kings” in August 2013. I think this “Three Kings” album is awesome! It is truly
amazing! Some of my favorite songs are “I Need”, “Sex Never Felt Better”,
“Lessons In Love”, “Explode”, “Running Back”, “Take It Wrong”, Weekend Love”
and “OMG”. You can listen to songs from TGT’s album the “Three Kings” on

Toi Horn
DJ Michael Ealey of Streetwise Radio is play this amazing artist Toi Horn. I want to know why she isn't more famous? Toi Horn is a pianist, vocalist, songwriter and producer from the D.C., Maryland area. Her musical genre are Jazz, Hip Hop, Neo Soul, R&B and World Music. I my opinion Toi is very underrated. I found out that she was forced against her will to take a psychological examination to determine he mental capacity and that she spent 72 days in a mental ward at a Texas prison. It did not say why all this happened to this awesome talent. Two things it did say, is that she passed a mental evaluation and the prison where she was held the psychiatric doctors said “that Toi Horn does not presently suffer from a mental disease or defect”. I added a link below with court and U.S Department of Justice documents. Even though she has had some challenges she is a true talent. I hope we continue hearing more from Toi Horn. Some songs that are going on my play list are “Corruption”, “Let It Happen”, “If You Want My Love”, “Silence”, “DC Is Where I'm From” and “Sexy Brown Thang”. You can listen to songs from Toi Horn on Streetwise Radio. Also listen to Streetwise Radio on Gilroy Radio, MyGen365, Athena365, Live365, iTunes and Pandora.

Amp Fiddler
It's a shame that Amp Fiddler’s talent has not gained him
more notoriety. I heard his song “Eye to Eye” from is 2004 album “Waltz of a
Ghetto Fly” on Streetwise Radio. I thought this brother has that 70’s sound.
Amp Fiddler is a singer-songwriter and keyboardist from Detroit , Michigan .
As I continued to listen to his music, I’m amazed that I have never heard of
him. It goes to show how awful the music has gotten on the on-air radio
stations and television music stations like BET, VHI and MTV. The so called
X-Generation doesn’t have a clue what real music is supposed to sound like.
They just keep listening to the crap that is being played and accepting it. Amp
Fiddler debut in 2004 with “Waltz of a Ghetto Fly” album some of my favorite
songs are “Eye to Eye”, “Dreamin”, “Soul Devine You Could Be Mine”, “I Believe
In You”, You Play Me”, “Unconditional Eyes” and This Is How”. If you have not
heard of Amp Fiddler, take a listen to some of his songs on Streetwise Radio he
is truly an artist that is funky and soulful. You can also listen to Streetwise

is an amazing songstress. Ntjam debut was in 2008 with her album “Atouba” since
then she put out 3 more albums, “Elle” in 2010, “Live at Grounds” in 2012 and
“At the Back of Beyond” in 2013. Ntjam sound is a mixture of two of my favorite artists Jill
Scott and India Arie. The song “At the back of beyond” the title of her 2013
album is a beautiful song. My favorite song “At the Back of Beyond”, “Thinkin
About You” and “Love is Calling”. Ntjam Rosie is a beautiful and talented
remarkable artist. Streetwise Radio is playing songs from Ntjam Rosie. You can

These
two blue eyed soul brothers with hip-hop, soul, jazz, breakbeat,

make wonderful music. I like Rae & Christian. Every song is so
different. Some of the songs that are going on

Luke James
Who is Luke
James? Luke James is a 28 year old talent from New Orleans, Louisiana that has
star quality. I remember
seeing Luke James dancing on Beyoncé Knowles "Run the World (Girls)"
music video. I did not know he was a singer and song writer. I like the way he delivers a song. Luke is a
gifted song writer, he writes beautiful songs. Luke has wrote hit songs for
some very popular artist in the music industry like Chris Brown (Crawl), Justin
Bieber (That Should Be Me), Britney Spears (Kill the Lights) and Keri Hilson
(Do It). This multi-talented artist gives credit to his mother for introducing
him to a wide array of music. Some musical artist that has inspired him is Marvin
Gaye, Willie Nelson, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and Alabama. Luke James
official debut album called “Made to Love” is due out sometime in 2013. The
first single from his album "Make Love to Me" was released on iTunes
on January 8th. Yes, Luke James has it all, to become a music artist
that will be around for a long time. My favorite songs are, “The Answer”, “Made
To Love”, “Signs of Rain”, “Guilty Pleasure”, “The Only Exception”, “I Want
You”, “That Should Be Me” and “Make Love to Me”. Luke James is the opening act
on the Mrs. Carter Show World tour April 15, 2013 through September 13, 2013.

The Band Vintage Trouble
I was
watching the late show on April 8, 2013 the musical guest was “Vintage
Trouble”. A week before Dj Michael Ealey was playing “Vintage Trouble- Nobody
Told Me”. My husband commented on how tight the band sounded and how good the
drummer was. They performed the song “Pelvis Pusher” this song was high energy,
it reminded me of the music from the late 50s and the 60s. Vintage Trouble has
only been around since 2010. They have hit the music scene with a refreshing
old new sound. This collection of musicians formed in Los Angeles. They consist of, Ty Taylor (vocal), Nalle Colt
(guitar), Richard Danielson(drummer) and Rick Barrio Dill (bassist). Vintage
Trouble has a fan base known as "TroubleMakers." The lead singer Ty
Taylor sings with that church R&B sound he has a lot of energy. In 2011
they went overseas and were a hit they were named Breakout Artist of the Year
by Music Weekly and HMV hailing them as their "Next Big Thing.” I like “Vintage Trouble” it is refreshing to
see a band playing live music again giving that old school sound. Justin
Timberlake started it off this year with the 20/20 Experience. Is this what we
have to look forward to in the music industry? I sure hope so. Tune into
Streetwise Radio and listen to “Vintage Trouble”. You can also listen to

Lynden David Hall
I
was listening to Streetwise Radio when I heard Lynden David Hall’s
song ’Are We Still Cool’. I said this brother can sing. While
listening to his music and doing some research I’m sad to say he
passed away. Lynden David Hall was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma
in October 2003. He died on 14 February 2006 at
the age of 31, from complications of stem cell
transplant he received in January 2005.
This Wandsworth, South London
born singer, songwriter, arranger, and record producer had a lot of
talent. Lynden could sing! He won two awards for his singing. The
'best newcomer' 1998 MOBO (Music of Black Origin) and he was voted
"Best Male Artist" by the readers of Britain's Blues &
Soul magazine in 1999. Lynden is an amazing soul singer left this
world far too soon. I had to write about him so others that never
heard of Lynden David Hall could experience his remarkable gift. I
added him to my playlist. Some of my favorite songs are ‘Medicine 4
My Pain’, ‘Do I Qualify’, ‘Forgive Me’, ‘Sexy
Cinderella’, ‘All you need is Love’, ‘Are We Still Cool’
and ‘Sleeping With Victor’. I know he was taken far too soon, but
his music will live on. Streetwise Radio is playing Lynden David

Lee Hi
One
thing I can say about 16 year old South Korean Lee Hi, a whole lot of
soul. Lee Hi debut single “1.2.3.4” has that old R&B sound.
Even when she is singing in her native tongue it is soulful, she
sounds much older than what she is. Lee Hi was the 2011 runner up
"Survival K-Pop Star". Lee Hi was a member of the girl
group SuPearl. The only thing I don’t like is the auto tune on her
song. Her voice is strong enough without it. Lee Hi is a talent to

Naturally 7
Naturally
7 is a this astonishing, talented, funky, amazing male singing group that specializes in ‘Vocal Play’. Vocal Play is
when each member uses their voice in unison to recreate a different
musical instrument, from drums to brass instruments and guitars. The
group members consist of Roger Thomas (musical director, arranger,
1st Baritone,
Rap), Warren Thomas (percussion, guitar, clarinet, and 3rd
tenor), Rod Eldridge (1st
tenor, scratching, trumpet), Napoleon “Polo” Cummings (4th
Tenor, guitar), Dwight Stewart (2nd
baritone, vocals, and trumpet), Garfield Buckley (2nd
Tenor, Harmonica) and Armand “Hops” Hutton (Bass), all this
uniqueness mergers into the sound of Naturally 7. The group was
started by Roger Thomas and his brother Warren in New York City in
1999. Five other talented singers were added to the group over the
years, while they were singing around the city. In the fall of 2007
they had success over in Europe and were forced onto the world with
their extraordinary talent. Naturally 7 have recorded a number of
albums over the years and with every album, just kept getting more
amazing. Naturally 7’s debut album “Non Fiction” was recorded
in 2000, “What Is It” (2003), “Christmas …It’s A Love
Story” (2004), “Ready II Fly” (2006), ‘Wall Of Sound’
(2009) and “Vocal Play” (2010). I don’t see why it took so
long for this group to get recognized for their phenomenal talent.
Naturally 7 have a lot of fans over in Europe. It baffles me that I
have never heard of them, since they originated in New York. I must
say it is hard to pick a favorite song of Naturally 7 but I think I
like Feel It (In the Air Tonight)”, “Broken Wings”, “768”,
“RESCUE - God's Eyes” and “Blessed Assurance”. Naturally 7
have a new album is due to be released in the winter of 2012 called,
“All Natural Live”. Naturally 7 will be touring worldwide in 2012
and 2013. I know we are going to be hearing a lot from these 7
talented brothers, who truly have a gift from God! If you have never
heard of Naturally 7 you can hear them on Streetwise Radio. Listen to

KJ McNeil “I’m Music”
KJ McNeil is the son of
Karl McNeil who is a Jazz and R&B musician who has toured and
recorded with some great artist like, Regina Belle, Bobby Womack,
Miles Jaye, Phil Perry, Donald Byrd, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls and
Gerald LeVert. KJ McNeil was a child prodigy. His father Karl McNeil
detected KJ’s keen ear and the ability to pick up music at the
tender age of 10 months. At the age of two KJ was entertaining other
musicians, by sitting in and jamming with them on his drums. That is
when other musician took notice of his growing talent. When he was 9
years old he became a professional musician. He subbed for another
drummer during one of his father’s gigs. KJ has also been a
professional jazz drummer since the age of 12 and has played with
many great jazz musicians and recording artists including his father
Karl McNeill Sr. KJ was selected to attend the Governor's School of
the Arts program in Delaware at the age of 15. While he was going to
school he continued to perform with the best jazz and R&B
recording artists and increasing his skill level. KJ McNeil is a
musician, vocalist, composer, and producer. KJ has two singles out
called "Where U Start" and "The Sense of Leave”
these songs are on the “I’m Music” album, soon to be released.
KJ is one talented artist he wrote, produced, provided all vocals and
recorded all live instrumentation on all of his songs. I’m looking
forward to hearing his entire album. If there are other songs like
"Where U Start" and "The Sense of Leave” on the
album, KJ McNeil’s album is going on my playlist. I think this
brother is a talent and a well-rounded musician that can sing. I hope
we will be hearing from KJ McNeil for years to come.

Eric Bene`t Jordan was born on October 15, 1966 in Mobile Alabama. He is the youngest of five siblings. Eric grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He sang with group called the Gerard in the 1980s. In 1992 Eric his sister and his cousin formed a band called Bene’t, they released a self-titled album in 1992 that sold 100,000 records. Eric’s had some personal problems so his career was put on hold for a while. His father died of cancer. He became a single father of daughter named India his girlfriend Tami Marie Stauff died on April 29, 1993 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.Eric was married to Halle Berry from 2001 to 2005. In 2011 he married Princes ex-wife Manuela Testolini who gave birth to a baby girl, Lucia Bella on December 21, 2011. Eric’s career really started to flourish when he was nominated for a Grammy for “Spend My Life With You”, a duet he did with Tamia. This song was one of my favorites in 2000. Eric released his 7th album “The One” on June 5, 2012. This album is honest, classy and smooth. It has a lot of slow songs and has some up tempo songs as well. I really like this album and these are the songs that speak to me, “Gonna Be My Girl”, “That's My Lady”, “Harriett Jones”, “Runnin”, “News For You”, “Here In My Arms”. “I Hope That It's You” has a reggae beat. Eric and his daughter India Bene`t are doing a duet on the song “Muzik (Feat. India BenĂ©t)”. This is a beautiful song. Eric really did his thing on this album. I’m going to put this one on my playlist. Listen to some songs from Eric Bene`t “The One” album on Streetwise Radio. Ruben Studdard (Letters from Birmingham)
The world fell in love with Ruben Studdard in 2003 when he was a contestant on American Idol T.V. show. Ruben Studdard was born Christopher Theodore Ruben Studdard on September 12, 1978 in Frankfurt, Germany. Ruben grew up in Birmingham Alabama, he began singing at the Rising Star Baptist Church he was three years old he when he sang for the first time. Ruben received a scholarship to Alabama A&M University in football while he was playing at Huffman High School. While Ruben was growing up he was listening to his mother’s Donny Hathaway and Fred Hammond albums. He decided he would pursue a career in music. Ruben joined the men’s music fraternity of America Omicron Delta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Ruben was nicknamed the “Velvet Teddy Bear” when he was on American Idol and that name truly fit him. Ruben’s career took off after winning American Idol the single “Flying Without Wings” the song he sung on the finale show and one of the songs on his debut album “Soulful” released in 2003. This is still one of my favorites songs. Ruben went on to release a gospel album in November 2004 entitled “I Need an Angel” which was number one on the Gospel Charts in the first week and number twenty on the Billboard charts. Ruben went on to release two more albums in 2006. His third album “The Return”, he collaborated with Ne-Yo. On this album and in 2009 “Love Is” was released. I still enjoyed both of these albums. Ladies, Ruben Studdard is a single man again. His marriage to Sutra Zuri McCants lasted less than three years and with this said his new album “Letters From Birmingham” has been released and it is Ruben Studdard at his finest. My favorite songs on this album are “Do It Right (Feat. Chrisette Michele)”, “Turn U Out”, “What’s The Reason”, “Twisted Love” “Love Skies” and “ June 28th (I’m Single)”. Ruben Studdard pours his heart into this album and the diversity of this album is very appealing. You Can listen to songs form Ruben Studdard’s album “Letters from Birmingham” on Streetwise Radio or live365, MyGen365, Athena365 and iTunes.
