Second Line For Ellis Marsalis

By Shelah Moody

On April 1, the music world lost one of its greatest influencers, New Orleans jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis. At 85, Marsalis died of complications from the coronavirus global pandemic.
Media tributes poured in worldwide from his four successful sons,  Wynton (trumpet), Branford (saxophone), Delfeayo (trombone) and Jason (drums) as well as Harry Connick Jr., Herbie Hancock and the many musicians he tutored and mentored.
On April 6, Wynton Marsalis, despite executive director of Jazz at Lincoln Center,  despite grieving in isolation, (jazz.org) used his live digital intimate weekly conversation,  “Skain’s Domain” to pay tribute to his father with special guests Terrance Blanchard, Joey Alexander, Andre Carter, and others.
“He went out the way he lives: embracing reality,” Wynton posted on Instagram.
“My daddy was a humble man with a lyrical sound that captured the spirit of place--New Orleans, the Crescent City, the Big Easy, the Curve,” Branford posted on Twitter. “He was a stone-cold believer without extravagant tastes.”

Easter weekend,  Delfeayo took to Facebook https://www.facebook.com/DelfeayoMarsalis/ for a live check-in thanking well-wishers sending their condolences and honoring his father. Delfeayo was quarantined at his home in New Orleans after being tested for coronavirus.

As I reflect on the 1st Easter without my dad (well in fairness he wasn't one prone to much celebration about things) and the 3rd without my mother I'm reminded of their resolve to honor their commitment to family and sacrifice for their sons. Today I'll raise a glass to D & E  (Dolores and Ellis) with love in my heart and a smile on my face!”

POPS, THE NINTH WARD, AND PANCAKES

During the summer of 2018, I had the privilege of experiencing Ellis Marsalis's legacy as a musician and educator first hand. I  volunteered at the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, the jewel of Ninth Ward, which nurtures the next generation of singers, composers, dancers and players of instruments. During youth piano recitals and new artist showcases, Marsalis was often on hand to lend his inspiration and support and then stopping for a cool glass of lemonade afterward.
Shortly after his passing, Michele Brierre, executive director of the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, reflected on the passing of her friend.

“A true legend has passed but not without enriching the lives of so many of us whom he touched,” said Brierre. “Ellis Marsalis was a master educator with a unique ability to share his gifts and wisdom. As important, Ellis defined character. In how he lived his life, he set a worthy example for us all. It has been my life's great fortune and pleasure to work under Ellis' guidance for the past decade as the executive director of the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music. The Center lives on to fulfill the passion and to uphold the legacy of this great American treasure.”

That summer, thanks to  Delfeayo Marsalis, I worked in Ellis Marsalis’  household as a caregiver for his adult autistic son, MBoya. I believe God placed me there for a reason: to learn humility, grace, and compassion. I would iron for elder Marsalis, aka Pops,  and wash the dishes and make coffee, trying to work carefully and quietly around him as he read the morning paper, watched CNN from his favorite chair in the den or kept council with family members. One afternoon, I was lucky enough to hear Mr. Marsalis rehearsing on the piano upstairs! One Sunday morning after I arrived for my shift; he decided to make pancakes for the household and he asked me if I wanted some, too! They were delicious! I will always remember his kindness, generosity, good sense and good humor! Plus, he was one of the calmest people I’ve ever met. Real soulful.
During the summer of 2018, Ellis Marsalis’ Friday night set at Snug Harbor on Frenchmen Street was the hottest ticket in town. As soon as he hit the stage at Satchmofest, people rose to their feet. During July Fourth weekend, I accompanied Mr. Marsalis and his family to his performance at the 20th Annual Patriotic Music Fest at Trinity Church, where he jammed with the Marine Jazz Trio (see clip). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QkI0kYTt5w
Ellis Marsalis, an NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) Jazz master, was a strict and beloved educator at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the University of New Orleans and Xavier University of Louisiana. He was a scholar and intellectual whose home was filled with books. On “Skain’s Domain,” Wynton remembered him encouraging him to read “Autobiography of a Yogi,” by Paramhansa Yoganamda.
“We lost a great pioneer in modern jazz piano artistry and music education advancement in Ellis Marsalis,” Herbie Hancock posted on Instagram. “He instilled in others, including his sons, led by Wynton and Branford, the fruits of his legacy, creating their own.  May he Rest in Peace.”

Streetwise Radio Touring Musician Spotlight: Scott “Scojo” Johnson By Shelah Moody

Sax player Scott “ScoJo” Johnson is one of the gems I discovered during my stay in New Orleans last year.  Johnson is arguably one of the most studious and hard-working musicians in Crescent City. In one season, I saw Johnson gig with Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (Jazzfest) and Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, freelance at the Spotted Cat on Frenchmen Street and accompany flutist Nikia Russell at the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music in the Ninth Ward. I recently caught up with the cool southern gentleman for a brief talk on music. Check out a clip of ScoJo performing:

Streetwise Radio:  Where are you from originally, and what drew you to New Orleans?

Johnson: I’m originally from Jackson, MS. I taught marching band for several years after I graduated from college at the University of Southern Mississippi. I only got a chance to gig two times every three months. Needless to say, I wasn’t happy with that. I saw an Alan Watts video that was basically asking what you would do for a living if money were not an object. I quit the next day after I saw that video, and moved to New Orleans. I,  along with all of my friends, would visit New Orleans all the time, so I knew what the music scene was like. It seemed like any time of day, seven days a week, there was something great going on as far as music goes. I came here because I felt like I could have a chance to play as little or as much as I wanted to.

Streetwise Radio: What drew you to the sax and how many instruments do you play?

Johnson: In elementary school, all of the fourth and fifth graders were required to play the recorder. The fingering for the recorder is extremely similar to the saxophone. I auditioned for a performing arts school on the recorder. After I made it into the school, the instrumental instructor started me on saxophone because of the similar fingerings. Clarinet and flute have similar fingers to the sax, so I play those also. I also play the piano/keyboard.

Streetwise Radio: Music wise, what projects are you working on now?

Johnson: I’m currently working on an endorsement deal with a saxophone company. I can’t name the company until they give me the green light (and this is assuming that I get the endorsement). I’m also writing music again. Ideally, I would like to have an album completed by the fall of 2020.

Streetwise Radio: Describe your favorite festival experience of all time.

Johnson: I perform with Delfeayo Marsalis’ Uptown Jazz Orchestra. We recently had a performance in Connecticut at the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz. I think that was my favorite festival that I’ve performed at so far. Even the visual ascetics were unreal. To look into the crowd of hundreds of people sitting on the grass having the time of their lives... unbelievable.

Streetwise Radio: What pop song would you like to redo in jazz?

Johnson: I’ve arranged several pop tunes in the style of jazz. My favorite one that I’ve done is actually a rock tune called  “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden.

Streetwise Radio: So, what do jazz musicians like yourself do when hurricanes hit NOLA?

Johnson: During Hurricane Barry, the shows go on! If the venue is still open, we show up to play!!

Catch Scott “ScoJo” Johnson live on tour with Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, and every Wednesday night with the Orchestra at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, snugjazz.com.

Tantra Zawadi

Is groovy, smooth, jazzy and oh so soulful. This performance poet, actor and published author, brings awareness to issues that affect women. Through her music if you really listen to the lyrics, it speaks to what is going on in this crazy world today. This Brooklyn born poet, puts her poetry to music and makes a classic house sound. The deep drum beats in her music makes you want to move. Tantra Zawadi is one of the modern lyrical leaders and guardians of a timeless poetic tradition. Here are some of my favorite tunes from this outstanding artist, "Do It for Love", “Girl: A Choreospective”, "We Are The Stars" and “Above The Clouds”. Pete Belasco

There is one thing that I love. That is a song with a good groove, beautiful lyrics and a singer that can sing. Well Pete Belasco is one of those singers. He has a lush seductive sound. He reminds me of a combination of Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. He has been around since 1997 and I can’t believe I’ve never heard of him. Since his debut album Get It Together in 1997 he has put out two more albums Deeper in 2004 and Lights On in 2012. With each of his albums, he has stayed true to himself with that classic, sexy R&B groove while staying current. His song writing is amazing. He writes with feeling and sensuality. Pete Belasco is one talented singer/songwriter, piano player and saxophonist that is a true musician. Pete comes at us with deep passion rich tone and sumptuous melodic lines. Most of Pete's songs require listening ears for the message. That is alright because listening to good music makes you feel great. I hope Pete will always take his time putting out amazing music. He will have a fan for life. If you never heard of Pete Belasco tune into Streetwise Radio and listen to songs like “I Ain't Doin It”, “My Eyes” and “Deeper”. You can also tune into Pandora, iTunes, Streetwise Ultra Mix.

Avery Sunshine

The music industry has only one type of sound now days and that is auto tune. They make horrible singers sound like they can sing. You don’t have to worry about that with Avery Sunshine. She has a silky smooth, sensual voice with no auto tunes. She hits all music points, Gospel, Blues, Soul and Jazz. She is not afraid to praise God. Her song “Blessin' Me” is the song I have to hear, to get my day started. This 40 year old songstress and pianist is so underrated, it is a shame. She has put out two albums, in 2010 self-titled Avery Sunshine and in 2014 The SunRoom both of these albums are fantastic. She masterfully weaves together the "old school" with the new. It is hard for me to pick my favorite songs from these albums but here are some, “Blessin' Me”, “Ugly Part Of Me”, “10 Sweet Afternoon”, “Like This”, “See You When I Get There”, "Stick To Your Bones", “Nothing To Something” and "Won't You Try". Avery Sunshine is truly blessed and it shows in her music. If you like good inspiring music and amazing vocals you have to listen to Avery Sunshine. You can listen to Avery Sunshine on Streetwise Radio. You can also listen to Streetwise Radio on iTunes, Pandora, Athena365, Live365 and MyGen365.

Fertile Ground

I’ve never heard of Fertile Ground, but DJ Michael Ealey is playing them on Streetwise Radio. While writing this blog I discovered that, the six members of Fertile Ground are a very awesome and creative group. I like them because they have an amazing depth of music that touches on the jazzy, funky soul sound. They mix everything I love.
Fertile Ground started off as a three piece group in 1998, in Baltimore Maryland. The founder was James Collins on key boards, vocalist Navasha Daya and Drummer Marcus Asante. In 1999 the group added Ekendra Das on percussion, Freddie Dunn on trumpet and Craig D. Alston on woodwind. They resided in Atlanta, Georgia until they parted ways in the 2010 to pursue their solo projects. It is a shame because they made some great music.
While they were together they put out several albums. Their first two albums were a compilation called Perception. Seasons Change was their third album. Their last album was called Black Is. With this album they toured from 2004 through 2009 in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., LA, Paris, Tokyo and London. All of Fertile Ground’s albums, happen to combine all my favorite genres soul funk jazz and even hip hop. Fertile Ground is a mix of everything I love. I’m a fan now, if they ever get back together for a reunion tour I hope they come to the West Coast. Anywhere near Northern California, I sure would like to see them live.
Here are some songs that are going on my playlist, “Black Is", “A Blues for me”, “Take me higher”, “Yellow Daisies” “Broken Branches”, “Simple Timeless”, “You”, “Star People” and “Another Day”. There are many more but the list would be too long. So I gave you a little sample of their gift. If you’re not familiar with Fertile Ground, Streetwise Radio is play their songs. You can also listen to Streetwise Radio on iTunes, Pandora, MyGen365, Live365 and Athena365.

Impromp2

Jazz/Funk/Hip Hop duo Impromp2 from Los Angeles came out with their debut album in 1995 called “You're Gonna Love It”. It amazes me that I never heard of these guys. Their names are Sean E. Mack rapper and Johnny Britt trumpeter/vocalist. They complement each others style of singing. Since their debut album, they put out three more album. In 1997 “Can't Get Enough”, 2003 Impromp2 and 2008 “It Is What It Is”, all of these albums are great. They did not miss a beat. Wow! If you love soul music then you're going to love Impromp2. These guys are incredibly talented and their voices are smooth. Impromp2 sound is wonderful. You can listen to them while riding in the car or sitting at home chilling with the one you love. Since 2010, Johnny Britt has focused on a solo career and released his debut album in 2012 “Feels So Good”. I would love to see these guys in person. Some of my favorite songs from Impromp2 that are going on my play list are, “You're Gonna Love It”, "Enjoy Yourself", “Summer Nights”, “I'll Do Whatever”, “Luv 2 Ball”, “Angel”, “"Lovin' You", “Good Thang”, “Without You”. Toi Horn

DJ Michael Ealey of Streetwise Radio is play this amazing artist Toi Horn. I want to know why she isn't more famous? Toi Horn is a pianist, vocalist, songwriter and producer from the D.C., Maryland area. Her musical genre are Jazz, Hip Hop, Neo Soul, R&B and World Music. I my opinion Toi is very underrated. I found out that she was forced against her will to take a psychological examination to determine he mental capacity and that she spent 72 days  in a mental ward at a Texas prison. It did not say why all this happened to this awesome talent. Two things it did say, is that she passed a mental evaluation and the prison where she was held the psychiatric doctors said “that Toi Horn does not presently suffer from a mental disease or defect”. I added a link below with court and U.S Department of Justice documents. Even though she has had some challenges she is a true talent. I hope we continue hearing more from Toi Horn. Some songs that are going on my play list are “Corruption”, “Let It Happen”, “If You Want My Love”, “Silence”, “DC Is Where I'm From” and “Sexy Brown Thang”. You can listen to songs from Toi Horn on Streetwise Radio. Also listen to Streetwise Radio on Gilroy Radio, MyGen365, Athena365, Live365, iTunes and Pandora.

Ntjam Rosie

I was listening to Streetwise Radio and I heard Ntjam Rosie “I Need”.  I thought this is a song that is going on my playlist. This 30 year old jazz, soul singer and songwriter from Sonkoe, Cameroon is an amazing songstress. Ntjam debut was in 2008 with her album “Atouba” since then she put out 3 more albums, “Elle” in 2010, “Live at Grounds” in 2012 and “At the Back of Beyond” in 2013. Ntjam sound is a mixture of two of my favorite artists Jill Scott and India Arie. The song “At the back of beyond” the title of her 2013 album is a beautiful song. My favorite song “At the Back of Beyond”, “Thinkin About You” and “Love is Calling”. Ntjam Rosie is a beautiful and talented remarkable artist. Streetwise Radio is playing songs from Ntjam Rosie. Douye`-Golden Days

It has not been a Jazz, Pop, Contemporary artist that has stood out since Sade, Anita Baker. Well, Douye` in my opinion is right up there. Michael Ealey the DJ of Streetwise radio said to check her out. I’m listening to her music while I’m writing this blog and I must say she has smooth and sultry sound. Douye` is Nigerian born, lives in Los Angeles and is a real talent. She first started singing in church at the age of seven. In her mid-teens she traveled to Europe to pursue her growing musical dreams. Douye` came back to the USA where she studied voice at the acclaimed Musicians Institute in Hollywood California. After graduating, Douye performed in clubs throughout Los Angeles. I can’t believe I have never heard of her before. This goes to show you that there are so many great artists out there that have not been played on mainstream radio. Douye` debut album “Journey” came out in 2008. Four years later she has a new album out called “Golden Days”.  The songs on the album “Golden Days” and “Life Is Good” have me thinking about days when I’m kicked back on a Sunday afternoon with my honey. Douye` is an artist that beautiful! With a lot of sweetness! I’m a fan! Streetwise Radio is playing “Golden Days”.  You can listen to Streetwise Radio on MyGen365, Athena365, Live365 and ITunes.

KJ McNeil “I’m Music”

KJ McNeil is the son of Karl McNeil who is a Jazz and R&B musician who has toured and recorded with some great artist like, Regina Belle, Bobby Womack, Miles Jaye, Phil Perry, Donald Byrd, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls and Gerald LeVert. KJ McNeil was a child prodigy. His father Karl McNeil detected KJ’s keen ear and the ability to pick up music at the tender age of 10 months. At the age of two KJ was entertaining other musicians, by sitting in and jamming with them on his drums. That is when other musician took notice of his growing talent. When he was 9 years old he became a professional musician. He subbed for another drummer during one of his father’s gigs. KJ has also been a professional jazz drummer since the age of 12 and has played with many great jazz musicians and recording artists including his father Karl McNeill Sr. KJ was selected to attend the Governor's School of the Arts program in Delaware at the age of 15. While he was going to school he continued to perform with the best jazz and R&B recording artists and increasing his skill level. KJ McNeil is a musician, vocalist, composer, and producer. KJ has two singles out called "Where U Start" and "The Sense of Leave” these songs are on the “I’m Music” album, soon to be released. KJ is one talented artist he wrote, produced, provided all vocals and recorded all live instrumentation on all of his songs. I’m looking forward to hearing his entire album. If there are other songs like "Where U Start" and "The Sense of Leave” on the album, KJ McNeil’s album is going on my playlist. I think this brother is a talent and a well-rounded musician that can sing. I hope we will be hearing from KJ McNeil for years to come.

Guru

.
I’m writing about Keith Edward Elam known by Guru, because my cousin DJ Michael Ealey is going to be featuring Guru’s Jazzamatazz Volume II Reality CD on his internet radio station Streetwise Radio. Guru stands for Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal. I have been listening to Guru’s music while writing this blog, I’m wondering why I have not never heard of this brother. His Jazzmatazz album’s volume 1 through 4 is a fusion of jazz and hip hop at its best. Guru has some of the great jazz and R&B artists featured on this album like Donald Byrd, Simon Law, N'Dea Davenport, Branford Marsalis, DJ Jazzy Nice, DC Lee, Lonnie Liston Smith and Roy Ayers, Chaka Khan, Courtney Pine, Gary Barnacle, Carleen Anderson, DC Lee and DJ Jimmy Jay. Guru featuring Angie Stone “Keep Your Worries” is on hit. It is real refreshing to hear a rapper rap about something positive, other than that crap about degrading women, drinking, smoking, killing and the bling. It is truly sad that Guru died too young from cancer, just when his career was starting to blow up. His legacy will live on through his music. If you have not heard of Guru like myself listen to Streetwise Radio Big Hop at 6pm Pacific time You will be a fan for life.
